16 May Outfit Ideas: Splendour in the Grass 2017 Festival
Festival Style Has Never Looked so Good!
Once upon a time I worked with one of my very best gal pals as a lowly PR bitch for the Big Day Out, and then when we both moved to Byron Bay (for me it was a move back to my home town that I had so desperately wanted to escape in my teens), Splendour in the Grass. So, I know the pain of trying to get festival-ready (plus I grew up with bohemian parents who took us from one moon dance to the next…in an old Thunderbird car – I kid you not!).
I always wanted my outfit to carry off some elusive mix of cool and fearless, but somehow stylish. But it’s tricky to get all three to co-exist. Especially is you’re also battling knee-deep mud (Splendour) or ‘effing summer heat (Big Day Out).
Inevitably I’d fall back on my fave festival muses and vintage clothing shops for help. In the early day’s of the Big Day Out it was Blondie, Nina Hagen, Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani and a melded version of Kate Bush and Siouxsie (think 1930’s flowing night gowns in pastels shades with chunky black studded belts and boots).
When I hit Byron, it was more about Kate Moss, Alison Mosshart and a sorta-of girly version of Ian Astbury from The Cult (American Indian meets Cowgirl who only wears black).
Either way, I love to mix vintage with new. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of head-to-toe vintage (when it looks too much like a costume – although some bombshells I know can pull it off spectacularly!), but I think the only way you can make a statement of your own is to throw in some cool one-off vintage pieces to your festival look.
For me it’s a mash-up boho, ballerina and Calamity Jane…plus lots of tassels, sequins and studs to help you shine! Need to know where to shop for vintage in Byron and beyond? Check out my ultimate guides by clicking here. Sarah x
